Coworker told me my filler work was 'pretty but thin' and it stuck with me

I had a guy I respect come over and look at a rear quarter panel I was blocking out. He ran his hand over it and just said 'looks nice but you laid it on too thin, gonna sink in a week.' I was stubborn about it but sure enough three days later I could see the sand scratches ghosting through. Now I always lay a solid 1/8 inch skim coat on metal work instead of trying to be fancy with a thin spread. Has anyone else had a mentor call them out on something dumb like that?

Learned that lesson on a car hood once. Still cringe thinking about it.

Oh man, I had a buddy who kept getting told his welds were "cold" and he swore they were fine until one snapped right in front of him!
