Had a bodyshop tell me I needed to replace a whole door for a small dent
I spent 20 minutes with my stud welder and slide hammer fixing that same dent myself, so why do so many shops jump to replacement panels instead of actually learning to do dent repair right? Has anyone else noticed this trend getting worse or is it just my area?

that stud welder is your best friend for small dents, seriously. most shops just quote a whole door because they don't want to mess with the paint or risk a bad repair. plus insurance companies pay out for new panels way easier than they do for labor hours on dent repair. it's a pain but I've learned to just handle anything smaller than a fist myself now. saves me hundreds and the car looks better for it.

My buddy's truck had this dent on the rear quarter panel from a shopping cart, maybe the size of a baseball, and the shop quoted him $900 for a whole new panel. I told him to bring it over and we spent maybe two hours with my cheap Harbor Freight stud welder and a slide hammer. It came out good enough that you can't even notice it unless you're really looking, and that was after a rattle can of clear coat to seal the tiny pinholes. Stuff like that is why I'll NEVER bother with a shop for anything that doesn't need a new frame or engine work.
