I figured out a trick for masking trim without tape residue

I was tired of tape leaving sticky marks on chrome. Now I use a thin layer of conditioner first. It acts as a barrier and wipes off clean. For example, on window seals, it works great. I tried it on three jobs last month with no issues. It saves me from having to scrub off glue later. Give it a shot if you hate residue.

You know what's worse than tape residue? When the tape peels off something it shouldn't. I was trying to mask off a pinstripe on a door once, just a quick touch-up. The tape grabbed that old stripe and lifted the whole section clean off. Had to redo the entire side. Makes you wonder if the barrier trick would save the paint too, or just save the cleanup?

Yikes, that reminds me of my buddy's disaster with tape on his motorcycle tank. He was trying to mask off a small logo for a touch-up (a real careful job, he thought), and the tape yanked off the clear coat and part of the decal underneath. It was a vintage bike, so he ended up having to repaint the entire tank because the patch job looked awful. Later, he used car wax as a barrier, but it smeared and needed polishing anyway. He said the conditioner method might have been easier, but he never tried it again after that mess.

Ever try plain car wax for the same trick? Did that on my old truck's wiper cowl. The wax just buffed off after painting. Left a faint haze though, had to polish it after. Your conditioner idea sounds less work honestly.
