Just realized I've been wrong about painting over primer for 12 years

Had a chat with an old timer at the NAPA counter in Fresno last Tuesday who told me I'm wasting time sanding between primer and paint on modern urethanes, said the solvents bond just fine without it. Made me think about all those hours I spent on that 2017 F-150 job where I wet-sanded every panel for nothing.

Jumped right in to agree with that. I basically did the same thing for like 15 years, I had a whole routine with 400 grit and a block on every single car before paint. Then a buddy who paints aircraft told me I was just making extra work for myself, said modern urethane primers are designed to self-level and the solvents grab the primer surface chemical-like, not mechanical. I tested it on my own silverado, one side scuffed and one just cleaned and degreased, let it cure a month and you can't tell which is which, no peeling or anything. Makes you wonder how many weekends we gave up for nothing, right? Still, I do a quick scuff with a red pad if it's been sitting in primer for more than a week just for peace of mind, but that's it.

Old timer's got it half right but you still want a quick scuff.
