Pearl white over bare metal, 20 years of painting and I still held my breath

Back in 2004 I did a full respray on an old Accord in the Dimora parking lot, and pearl white showed every ripple in my filler work. These days with the newer waterborne clears I feel like I can hide more sins, but the prep discipline from those early jobs is the only reason my hands still don't shake. Anybody else notice the modern materials let you get away with less, or is it just me getting pickier?
