Pro tip: Had a chat with a 30-year veteran painter at the local NAPA store yesterday who said my clear coat was failing because I was laying it on too thick.
He showed me his worn-out spray gun tip and said he measures his mil thickness every 5 coats now, has anyone else switched to a wet film gauge after a bad peel?

@the_joel is right but I gotta push back a little on the "orange peel" thing. That's usually more about gun setup than coat thickness. Too much air pressure or wrong fluid nozzle size will give you that texture way before mil thickness does. I used to get it bad with my old gun until I dialed back the air. The wet film gauge is solid advice though. I check mine every 3-4 coats just to be safe. Saves a lot of sanding later.

Totally agree, man. I laid a coat on way too thick last summer and ended up with a peel that looked like an orange. Picked up a wet film gauge the next day and never looked back.
