That $40 weld spatter spray saved my weekend in Denver
Last Saturday I was doing a rear quarter panel on a 2015 Civic, the customer wanted it done by Monday so they could drive to work. I kept fighting the spatter on the new metal, it was sticking to everything even after I cleaned it with acetone twice. My old timer buddy Tom swung by to borrow my slip roll and saw me cussing at the gun. He handed me a can of that anti-spatter spray from his truck, the cheap stuff from Napa, not the fancy name brand. I sprayed a light coat on the surrounding panel before each pass and man, the difference was night and day. The spatter just flaked off with a wire brush, no grinding, no gouging the paint. I finished the whole job in about 3 hours instead of the usual 5 or 6. I always figured that stuff was a gimmick, but now I'm wondering if I should use it on every MIG job or if there's a downside I'm missing, like it messing with the weld strength or leaving residue that hurts the primer later. Anyone else use it daily or is it just a one-off trick?
