That painter who called me out on my primer technique
Three years ago I was shooting a silver 2018 Civic in Tulsa and this older painter named Dave stopped by my booth. He watched me lay down primer and just shook his head. Said I was putting it on too thick and too wet, that I was chasing coverage instead of building layers. I was basically flooding the panel and creating adhesion problems down the road. He told me to do three thin medium passes instead of one heavy one, letting it flash between each. I tried it on that job and the clear laid down way flatter with less orange peel. Now I do that on every job and my redo rate on paint work dropped a ton. Anyone else have an old timer just show up and give you a free lesson that stuck with you?

Does he work in a humid shop where flash times actually matter?

Why would you take advice from some random old dude who probably learned his craft before modern paints and clearcoats were even a thing? Heavy coats work fine if you know how to handle them, and stripping down to three thin passes just adds time and risk of dry spots if conditions aren't perfect. If your original method was getting the job done without issues, switching to his way feels like a gamble for something that ain't broken.
