Watched a late 90s Chevy paint job fail after 2 years because of bad prep work

I saw this guy bring in a silverado he had painted in his garage 2 years ago. Looked decent from 10 feet but up close the clear was peeling off in sheets. He said he rushed the sanding step and only did like 320 grit instead of going down to 600. The paint just never bonded right because of those deep scratches. Anyone else run into clear failure from lazy prep work like that?

Factory clear was already trash on those, prep just sped up the inevitable peel.

...and the guy probably bragged about saving $2000 on the paint job too. I've seen that exact thing with those late 90s Chevys, the paint was already thin from the factory so slapping on new clear over 320 grit scratches is like asking for it to peel. My buddy did the same thing on his '97 F150, used a DA sander with 180 grit "just to rough it up" and six months later the hood looked like it had a bad sunburn. I guarantee he said "it'll be fine" when someone told him to sand it properly too.

My husband tried that once and now I call his truck the peeling potato.
