A judge at the Tulsa rib cookoff told me my sauce was 'too fancy for this parking lot' and I still think about it
Back in October I entered my first small rib contest in Tulsa, just a $50 entry at a VFW parking lot with maybe 14 teams. An older judge named Ray worked his way down the table, took one bite of my ribs, set the bone down, and said 'son, this sauce is too fancy for this parking lot.' He wasn't mean about it, he just moved on to the next tray like he'd solved me in one chew. I finished 11th out of 14 and laughed the whole drive home, but now every time I tweak a glaze I hear that line. Any of you ever get a judge comment that stuck with you longer than the score did?
