Just realized my brisket stall was a blessing in disguise at the Memphis in May contest

My temp probe failed at 4 AM, so I had to go by feel and the bark, which taught me more in that one smoky panic than the last five cooks combined, so what's your best 'equipment fail' story that actually helped you?

My old smoker's door latch broke mid-cook, so I had to rig it shut with a bungee cord. That forced me to stop peeking so much, which gave me the best smoke ring I'd ever gotten (go figure). Honestly, getting locked out of my own gear made me learn patience.

My first smoker was so leaky I used to call it the neighborhood smoke signal. The brisket was always dry, but at least the local mosquitoes stopped biting.
