Unpopular opinion: BBQ lessons for kids are a hot topic in our house

I mean, I've seen this trend where BBQ turns into a big family debate, especially with kids. In my family, my brother wants his son to learn the smoker at age nine, but my mom panics about safety. Last cookout, my nephew tried to check the fire and knocked over a coal bucket. We had to rush to save the ribs from burning, and everyone started yelling. Idk, maybe it's just me, but I think kids can help with simple stuff like rubbing meat or setting the table. Now we have a strict rule that only adults handle the pit, which helps avoid fights. It's funny how something as simple as cooking can show where family lines are drawn. Maybe that's just how it goes when you care about BBQ too much.

Did you see that article about teaching kids fire safety with a water spray bottle first?

Yikes, that coal bucket story sums up the whole debate. My uncle tried to teach his ten year old to manage the smoker and we nearly lost a patio table. Kids have no business near open flames until they can reliably tie their shoes. Simple tasks keep them involved without the drama. Otherwise every cookout turns into a stress test for your homeowners insurance. The adult only rule is the only way to go.

Saw a report last year where a kids' cooking class had them start with cold prep like mixing dry rubs. The instructor said building skills away from the heat first made a huge difference in safety later on. It makes sense to let them handle the spices before they ever touch the grill.
