Why does nobody talk about the smoke ring on a gas grill?

I was at a cookout in Austin and my buddy's dad pulled a pork shoulder off his basic propane grill with a perfect pink ring. He said he just put a small foil packet of wood chips right on the flavorizer bars. I've been overcomplicating my setup for years trying to get that result. Has anyone else pulled off real barbecue flavor without a dedicated smoker?

Guess we've all been buying the wrong gear for years.

Look at the fancy gear collecting dust in my garage. That foil packet method got me eating smoked ribs in under two hours last Tuesday. Sometimes you just want the flavor without the whole day-long project.

William_taylor misses the point. It's about dinner, not a trophy.

Wrong gear" is a stretch. That foil packet trick is a total hack and it's not reliable. You'll get a ring sometimes, but you can't control the heat or smoke like a real smoker. It's a party trick, not real barbecue.
