A guy at Aldi grabbed my cart and showed me his $23 receipt for a full week of dinners, and I still feel weird about it
So I'm standing in the Aldi on Bethel Rd in Columbus about 3 weeks ago, loading up on the usual rice and frozen chicken, and this older guy next to me just grabs the side of my cart to get my attention. He holds up his receipt and says loud, 'Twenty three dollars. Seven dinners for me and my wife.' I kind of laughed it off at first because I figured he was exaggerating, but he actually walked me through it, dried beans, a bag of onions, marked down pork, a huge thing of oats, and no meat in four of the meals. What got me was the oats, he said he eats them for breakfast and dinner and swaps in frozen veg so it doesn't get old. Been trying it 10 days now and my grocery bill dropped from around $95 a week to $48, no joke. Curious if anyone else here runs their whole week off one cheap protein and beans, and what you do when you get bored of it.
Dried beans and rice carried my family through some rough winters back when I was younger, and reading your post took me right back to that. We did the big bag of pinto beans with a ham hock thrown in on Sunday, then stretched that pot across four or five dinners with cornbread and whatever veggies were cheap. What saved us from getting sick of it was changing up the spices, cumin and chili powder one night, then garlic and onion the next, sometimes a little vinegar or hot sauce to wake it up. Eggs were our other cheap protein, and swapping those in for a couple dinners made a big difference. Ten days in and cutting your bill in half is no small thing, keep at it.
