Appreciation post: my 50 cent bag of dried beans just fed me for three days
I finally tried cooking a whole bag of pinto beans in my slow cooker, and I was shocked by how much food it made. I spent maybe two dollars total on onions and spices to go with it. Anyone have other cheap ways to flavor a big pot of beans?

That "shocked by how much food it made" feeling is the best. I always keep a jar of Better Than Bouillon around, a spoonful of that roasted garlic or vegetable base in the bean pot makes a huge difference. A smoked ham hock is another cheap winner if you eat meat.

Better Than Bouillon is a total game changer.

Right? That first time you cook a whole bag of beans is like a little magic trick. I had the exact same feeling when I finally made a big pot of black beans last month, ate on them for almost a whole week and it cost me pocket change. A smoked turkey leg is my secret weapon now, it adds so much smoky flavor without being pricey.
