Blew $60 on a 'budget' meal kit box that was a total ripoff

I tried that EveryPlate meal kit last month because the ads promised $5 per serving. After delivery fees and taxes my first box came to $60 for 8 meals. Half the produce was already turning brown when it arrived and the portions were TINY. I could have bought the same stuff at Aldi for maybe $35. Don't fall for those introductory prices the real cost hits after the first box. Has anyone else gotten burned by a meal kit that was supposed to be 'budget friendly'?

That "half the produce was already turning brown" part hits hard. I signed up for HelloFresh one time and got a box of cilantro that was basically slime. You're right about the real cost too. Those introductory prices are just hooks. Once you forget to cancel they jack it up to like $12 a meal and you're stuck with wilted veggies.

Is it really that deep though?

Right, the cilantro slime is a classic. One time I got a box where the "fresh" ginger was basically a dried up little stump. It made me wonder if they just scrape the bottom of the barrel for the veggie packs. The funny thing is, I've actually started having better luck just buying my own produce and using a simple meal planner app. Takes a bit longer but at least I can pick my own stuff. You ever try just doing that instead? It's probably cheaper in the long run too.
