Found rancid clearance chicken at 3 different stores this week

I hit three grocery chains in the same day looking for markdown meat and every single tray had a sour smell. The sell-by dates were still two days out but the meat was already turning, so that date clearly means nothing. Anyone else checking their discount meat before buying or am I just unlucky?

I saw a segment about it a few weeks back, and it stuck with me because we used to rely on those dates so much, but they are basically just a guess now. It’s honestly gross that you found sour chicken that still had two days left on the label, that means either the store’s fridge is way too warm or they are getting old stock from their warehouse. I always sniff the packages now, even if the date looks fine, and I also check the color and feel for any sliminess through the plastic. It is a pain, but it beats getting home and having to toss a whole tray.
