I used to think buying ground beef in bulk was always the smart move, but now I'm team small packs

Ngl, for years I was that guy buying the 5 pound tube of ground beef from Costco every month. It felt like a no-brainer since the per pound price was way lower than the grocery store. But I finally stopped doing it after I realized I was wasting almost a pound and a half every time because I couldn't use it all before it turned. The tipping point was last October when I opened a pack that had been in the freezer for 3 months and the texture was just off no matter how I cooked it. Now I just grab the 1 pound packs from Aldi when they're on sale for $3.49 each. Sure it costs a bit more per pound but I end up with zero waste and the meat tastes fresher every single time. Has anyone else ditched bulk buying for smaller portions for the same reason?

Honestly, this is so real and @nancy_davis nailed it with that guilt thing. I think a lot of us got stuck in that "but the math makes sense" mindset even when the real cost was way higher when you factor in what you toss. I switched to the smaller packs about a year ago too, and it's not just about the meat turning. My cooking actually got better because now I'm not desperately trying to use up a giant tube of beef in a week, so meals feel more intentional and I don't end up with some weird casserole I made just to clear the freezer. The texture thing is total facts - that freezer burn changes everything, especially if you don't have a vacuum sealer. It's wild how much less stressful grocery shopping is when you stop trying to outsmart the system and just buy what you'll actually use.

Oh man, yes! I had the exact same wake up call with ground beef. It's funny how we get tricked into thinking bulk is always better when really we're just paying for meat that's gonna sit in the freezer too long. I started buying the 1 pound packs too and it's honestly made cooking way less stressful. Plus I don't have that nagging guilt every time I throw away spoiled food, which was honestly eating at me more than I realized. The texture thing you mentioned is real too, I swore I was doing something wrong with my cooking but nope, it's just the freezer messing with the meat after a while.
