Just realized I was overcooking beans for 8 years

I grew up watching my mom boil pinto beans for like 4 hours on Saturday mornings, so that's what I did, every single time. Last month I tried a recipe that said to just simmer them for 90 minutes in a pressure cooker and they came out perfect, no mushy mess. Turns out the whole time I was wasting gas and time, not to mention the beans lost their shape and flavor. Now I do a big batch of black beans on Sunday night in about 40 minutes total, saves me maybe $15 a week on those canned ones. Has anyone else had a kitchen habit they kept for years that turned out to be totally unnecessary?

My buddy Tim boiled eggs 20 minutes for years until I showed him a 6 minute method.
