My mom's old soup trick saves me money every week
I used to throw out vegetable ends and peels. Now I keep them in a bag in the freezer. Once it's full, I boil them with water for broth. This free base makes my soups and stews cost less. It's a simple change that adds up over time.

When you say it stops feeling like a chore, what finally made it click for you?

Yeah, my grandma did the same thing and it finally clicked for me a few years ago. It honestly feels good to not be throwing so much away, on top of the money saved. That freezer bag of scraps turns into something you actually look forward to using. It stops feeling like a chore and just becomes how you cook.

Read an interview with a cooking show host who swears by the freezer bag method. She talked about keeping onion skins, carrot tops, and celery ends in a gallon bag until it's full. Simmering those scraps with some peppercorns makes the most flavorful broth, way better than anything from a box. It turns what you'd normally toss into the real base for a good soup or stew. That kind of thing makes you see your kitchen waste in a whole new way, like you're actually using everything.
