My neighbor's comment about her grocery bill made me switch up my meal plan

I was chatting with my neighbor, Sarah, on Tuesday and she mentioned her family of four spends about $80 a week on groceries. I was shocked because I spend almost that much for just myself. She said the key is planning three meals that all use the same cheap protein, like a big pack of chicken thighs. So this week I bought a 5 pound bag of lentils for $4 and built my dinners around that. Has anyone else tried this method of focusing on one main ingredient for the whole week?

Isn't it funny how one little comment can totally change how you do things? I've noticed that a lot of small money-saving tips actually come from just talking to people, not from some big plan.

Totally agree with you, @loganburns. My neighbor mentioned freezing leftover coffee for iced coffee later, and now I never waste a drop. Would have never thought of it on my own.

Oh man, I gotta disagree here. Sticking to one cheap ingredient all week sounds boring as hell to me, I'd get sick of lentils by Wednesday and end up ordering takeout anyway, which defeats the whole purpose.
