My old rice cooker finally gave up after 12 years
Last Tuesday it just stopped heating mid-cook, left me with a pot of cold water and hard rice. I ended up cooking it on the stove in an old pot, took twice as long but saved me from ordering takeout. Anyone else have a kitchen gadget die at the worst time?

Left me with a pot of cold water and hard rice" - man, is that really the end of the world though? I get it's annoying when your rice cooker decides to quit mid-stream, but you literally just cooked it on the stove and it was fine. Sounds like a minor inconvenience, not a tragedy. People act like their appliances are supposed to last forever and when they don't, it's some huge deal. Twelve years is a good run for any gadget honestly, most of them these days don't even make it half that long before something breaks.

Put it in a pot with a lid and let it sit on low heat for 20 mins, that cold water and hard rice will steam right up. @ericschmidt probably panicked and dumped it but it's fixable. I've saved mine a couple times just by being patient. People forget rice cookers are just fancy pots with a heating element, not rocket science.
