My rice was always mushy until my coworker laughed at me

I've been making rice for years by just guessing the water amount, dumping it in a pot, and hoping for the best. Last week my coworker Dave saw me scooping water with my hand and said 'you know that's not a measuring cup, right?' He showed me the finger knuckle trick and now my rice actually comes out right. Anybody else have a cooking habit they just never questioned?

The knuckle trick is definitely the way to go. It's one of those things that seems too simple to work but actually gets consistent results every time. Idk why more people don't learn it early, maybe because everyone assumes rice is harder than it actually is. The pot size and heat thing is a factor but honestly if you use the same pot and same heat setting each time it just becomes second nature after a while. I mean, mushy rice is kind of a big deal if you're trying to make fried rice or something where the texture actually matters a lot. Once you get it right it's hard to go back to guessing.

Is mushy rice really that big of a deal? I mean, it's not like it's burnt or crunchy, just a little wet. I guess if it bothers you that much the knuckle thing works, but your mileage may vary depending on pot size and heat.
