The week I lived off a $5 bag of potatoes and learned a hard lesson

I had $12 left after rent and bought a giant sack of russets, then spent three days trying to make them interesting before I cracked and just ate them boiled with salt. What's the cheapest single ingredient you've ever had to stretch for a whole week?

That giant sack of russets is a familiar sight. For me it was a big bag of rice. I got a soy sauce packet from a gas station and would mix that in, or I'd fry an egg if I found a cheap dozen. A little onion and garlic powder, which I already had, made it feel like a real meal. It was boring, but it filled the hole.

That "filled the hole" part is so real. But man, that hole wasn't just in your stomach. It was in your whole week. You'd eat the same thing for days and your brain just felt gray. The worst was when you ran out of the one spice that made it okay. Then it was just empty food.
