Unpopular opinion: I gave up on cheap ground beef and it cut my food bill

For years, I bought the cheapest 73/27 ground beef I could find, thinking I was saving money. I'd drain off a whole cup of grease after cooking a single pound, and the flavor was just okay. About six months ago, I switched to buying a single pound of 90/10 ground turkey for $4.99 and mixing it with a can of black beans I mash up. I get twice the volume for my main ingredient, the protein is better, and it doesn't shrink down to nothing in the pan. I use it for tacos, chili, and pasta sauce now. The texture is different, but my wallet feels it more. Has anyone else found a swap that actually gave them more meals for their cash?

Honestly, mixing in lentils with my beef stretches it for three extra meals.

That's a solid tip from @andrewt41. Lentils really soak up the flavor and make the whole thing way more filling. I do the same thing with ground turkey sometimes.

Huh, wait. Ground turkey with lentils? I don't think you're supposed to mix lentils with turkey like that. Lentils and beef work great because the beef fat and flavor hold up to them. Turkey's way leaner so the lentils kinda just dry everything out and you end up with this bland mush. If you're gonna stretch turkey, try adding some finely chopped mushrooms instead. They hold onto moisture way better.
