Found my 2018 bullet journal and the pages are basically empty

Back then I just had a black pen and a blank notebook, so I never really used it. Now I keep a simple weekly spread with colored highlighters and actually stick with it. What's the smallest change that got you to use your journal more?

Wait, so you're saying you actually managed to keep up with a bullet journal in 2018? Because I bought one that year too and I think I wrote in it like three times before giving up. @robin_wright mentioned fineliners, but for me it was getting a notebook with pre-printed dot grid pages instead of completely blank ones - the dots gave me just enough structure to not feel overwhelmed. I also started using a washable highlighter to mark off days I actually opened the journal, which sounds ridiculous but it created this little gamelike habit.

Yeah, the "blank notebook and black pen" phase is too real. For me it was buying a cheap pack of those thin colored pens. Having a color for work stuff and one for personal tasks tricked my brain into wanting to fill the pages. It's a silly little hack but it worked.

Actually, those thin pens are called fineliners. The cheap packs are great though. Color coding totally tricks your brain into using the notebook more.
