I thought those fancy watercolor spreads were just for show, but my niece proved me wrong.
She visited last weekend and asked to use my journal, then painted a simple weekly layout with a $12 set from the craft store. It dried flat, didn't bleed, and actually made me want to use that page. Has anyone else been surprised by a technique they initially wrote off as just decorative?

The cheap stuff works fine for most things once you figure out how to handle it. With watercolors, the trick is letting each layer dry completely before adding more, or you just get mud. I keep a little spray bottle nearby to rewet pans that dry out, makes a big difference with budget sets. Also helps to use decent paper even if the paint is cheap, something at least 140lb so it doesn't buckle.

Yeah, I saw a video once where someone used cheap crayons for a cool wax resist effect. Totally changed my mind about needing fancy supplies.

Wait, they used regular crayons? The waxy kind kids use? That's wild, I always thought you needed those special art crayons that cost way too much. My mind is actually blown that the cheap stuff works for that technique. I've been over here saving up for fancy supplies for no reason. That video just saved my wallet a lot of trouble.
