My sister shut down my whole system in 5 minutes flat

She glanced at my April spread and said "you spend more time decorating than actually planning." It hit different because she was right - I had 14 different markers, 3 washi tapes, and a stencil set just for one month. Now I keep it to black pen and one highlighter, and my tasks actually get done. Anyone else have a relative call them out on overcomplicating things?

My cousin Julie did the same thing to me with my bullet journal back in 2017. She pointed out I had more pages of "future log" doodles than actual entries, and it stung because I was basically just making pretty lists I never looked at again. I still use the same notebook but now it's just dates and tasks in my scratchy handwriting, way less pressure.

Why does it have to be either/or though? Decorating and planning can go hand in hand if you genuinely enjoy the creative part, @brookep62, and I've seen some people stay way more consistent with their journal when it looks nice to them.

I see it differently though. That 2017 moment your cousin called you out, and you changed things up, and that worked for you. But Taylor here has 14 markers and that's fine if that's part of the fun. I know a lot of people who never stick with a plain system because it feels like a chore. The whole point is to actually keep using the thing, and if 14 markers and washi tape make you excited to open it every day, that's not wasted time. That's just how some brains work better. Are you sure the problem was the markers and not just that you picked a complicated system that didn't fit you?
