Fancy new journal" makes me think of that sunk cost fallacy thing.

Totally get that. A fancy journal can trick you into thinking you have to write something important. Then you just stare at the blank page because it feels too nice to mess up. Honestly, a cheap notebook gets used way more.

Actually I think there's a different problem here nobody's mentioning - what if you buy the fancy journal and then your handwriting that day looks like a toddler wrote it? Then you've got this beautiful expensive book full of scratchy mess and it almost makes it worse. I had that happen with a leather-bound one I got as a gift, ended up tearing pages out because the pressure was too much (don't recommend that, ruins the binding). Sometimes the cheap notebooks just let you be sloppy and human without that weird guilt.
