That fancy 120$ BuJo notebook was a total waste for me

I bought a Archer & Olive notebook last month for 120$ because everyone said the pages are thick and no ghosting. But the paper is actually too smooth or something cause my fountain pen ink just sits on top and smears everywhere. I've ruined like 3 spreads already and now I'm back to using a 12$ Amazon Basics notebook. Anyone else have issues with expensive journals not working with their favorite pens?

Heard somewhere that coated paper can be tricky with fountain pens, not just the price.

Yeah I've definitely run into that with some glossy papers. The coating just sits on top of the fibers so the ink has nothing to grab onto and it beads up or smears. What kind of fountain pen are you using though? Because some nibs are wetter than others and that makes a huge difference on coated stock. I had a Pilot Metropolitan that was always a disaster on that sort of paper, but then my Lamy Safari with a drier nib worked fine. Also are you using a quick drying ink or something like a slow drying sheening one? That changes everything.
