Compared moderation policies on two forums I'm on and had to admit strict rules work better

I've been on a general discussion board for about 4 years where mods barely touch anything. It's a mess. People get into screaming matches, spam takes over, and I saw a guy post the same conspiracy link 12 times in one day. Last month I joined a small history forum that has a strict rule: no personal attacks, no derailing. At first I thought it was too controlling. But after 3 weeks there I realized I actually read 5x more posts because I wasn't filtering through garbage. The mods there also took down a thread that was just someone brigading based on a misquoted source. That would have stayed up on the other board forever. It made me wonder if I was too quick to call any moderation "censorship." Has anyone else found a tightly run forum that actually felt more free to talk?

I think you might be mixing up "strict" with "consistent." The small history forum sounds like it has clear, fair rules that are actually enforced, while the other board probably has a bunch of rules that just get ignored. It's not really about being strict so much as having moderation that actually follows through and doesn't play favorites.

Yeah I'm the guy who reads the rules five times and still accidentally breaks them in the first five minutes.
