Compared paying for a VPN vs just using public WiFi for a year... oof

Last year I thought I was being smart by saving $60 and just using the library's free WiFi for everything. Then I logged into my bank one day and saw a $400 charge from some electronics store in Michigan. I live in Oregon. Got a VPN the next day. Has anyone else learned this lesson the hard way?
