My school newspaper got shut down for 3 days over a comic strip, here's what changed my mind
Back in March at Westbrook High, our advisor pulled the whole issue because one panel made a joke about the mayor's parking ticket habit. I was furious, thought it was classic overreach. Then the principal showed us the legal threat letter from the city attorney, 14 pages long, and explained that even if we won in court, the school could lose funding. I spent a week arguing for full publication anyway. What finally convinced me was talking to the journalism teacher at Jefferson High, their paper ran something similar in 2021 and the school board cut their budget by $12,000 the next semester. So we ran a blank box with a note saying why it was removed, and we put the comic online with a link on our socials. That felt like a real compromise. Has anyone else dealt with a joke getting pulled, and did you fight it or find a workaround?
