Paid $250 for a VPN after my ISP blocked a news site, no regrets

Last fall my internet provider quietly blocked access to a regional news outlet that was critical of their parent company. I tried free proxies but they kept failing or selling my data, so I finally bought a year of a reputable VPN service for about $250. It let me read the articles and also exposed how many other sites were being throttled on my connection. Has anyone else found that paying a bit for privacy tools is worth it when your own service provider plays gatekeeper?

$250 just to read the news my ISP didn't want me seeing, that's one expensive newspaper subscription.
