Was sure VPNs were for criminals, then my own post vanished in Singapore

I spent years thinking people who used VPNs were hiding something shady, honestly. But last month I wrote a pretty mild post about local press freedom here in Singapore and it got removed within 4 hours, no explanation given. Someone in the comments suggested I try a VPN to see the version of the story that never got published in my region. I downloaded one on a whim, connected to a server in Hong Kong, and found three articles about the same incident that were totally missing from what I could see before. That was the moment it clicked for me, the tool is just a window, not a weapon. Now I run it anytime I research anything political or even just to compare what other countries report on us. Has anyone else had that moment where you realize the thing you judged is actually the thing you needed?

My buddy Dave travels for work a lot and always swore VPNs were just for people torrenting movies. Then he landed in Kuala Lumpur for a conference and tried to log into his bank back home, site wouldn't load. He fired up a free VPN just to check his balance, and suddenly the whole page appeared with zero hassle. Now he uses one every time he books flights from overseas because he kept getting rerouted to local versions of travel sites showing triple the price. Funny how the thing you judge ends up being the thing that fixes your daily headaches.
