Why I stopped defending the library book ban list after a mother in Hays showed me her daughter's shelf
I spent 2 years saying parents should control what kids read, but last month in Hays, Kansas, a mother showed me the 14 books removed from her daughter's school library and 11 were about kids of color just living normal lives, which made me realize this was never about protecting anyone.
Man, @henrygrant, my buddy in Wichita dealt with the same thing. His daughter's school pulled a bunch of books and almost all of them had Black or brown kids on the cover just doing normal stuff like riding bikes and going to school. He said it hit him like a brick once he actually looked at the pile.
