Worst week of my life after that school board meeting got cancelled
Last October I showed up to a public school board meeting in my town to talk about a book ban proposal. Walked right into a locked door. They cancelled it last minute with no notice. 47 other parents were there too, all just standing around confused. Turns out they moved it to a private Zoom with no public link. That week I found out the whole vote happened without any of us getting to speak. Has anyone else had a local government meeting just vanish like that?

Wait, they cancelled a public meeting and then held it on a private Zoom instead? That's insane lmao. Pretty sure that's not even legal in most places, you can't just hide a public vote like that. Something similar happened in my town last year with a zoning board thing, they posted the new time on a random part of their website nobody checks. It's wild how some officials think they can just bypass the public like that. Hope someone's looking into this for you guys.

Honestly @hannaht29, sounds like they're speedrunning the "how to get sued by your own town" challenge lmao. Ngl, posting the new time on some hidden page is basically just playing hide and seek with public records.

My old town did something similar with a school board vote back in 2018. They posted the rescheduled meeting on a page buried three clicks deep on the district website, then claimed "public notice was given." Found out later the IT guy who set it up got chewed out by the superintendent for even mentioning it in the staff newsletter. Took a local blogger to dig it up and make a stink about it. Ended up with a whole new transparency policy and a couple resignations.
