Decided between Kirby Morgan and Ocean Reef for my new helmet last month

I had to pick between a Kirby Morgan 37 and an Ocean Reef G.Diver for a 60-foot bridge inspection job in Savannah. Went with the K-M 37 because my old dive buddy swore by its reg performance, even though it cost me $1,200 more. Anybody else have strong feelings on helmet brands for shallow water work?

The G.Diver caught my eye at first because it was lighter on paper and I liked the price tag. Used to tell guys for shallow work like bridge inspections any good helmet would do the same job. Then my buddy took me on a 50-foot piling repair near Galveston where he was using his KM 67. Water was murky and we had current pushing hard. His comms were crystal clear the whole time and his reg didn't freeze up when we hit a cold pocket. I swapped helmets with him for a few minutes and felt the difference right away. That experience changed my mind completely about brands mattering for shallow water. Now I save up for the heavier gear every time.

My wallet still hasn't forgiven me for choosing the KM either.
