Had a chat with an old salvage diver in Galveston that shifted my view on cold water work
Honestly, I was telling him how I dread any job under 50 degrees. He just said, 'Kid, you're not fighting the cold, you're fighting your own gear. A drysuit leak isn't a nuisance, it's a countdown clock.' Ngl, that hit different. Made me realize I've been treating my suit checks like a chore instead of a real safety step. Anyone else have a simple gear check tip that changed their comfort level down there?

Damn, that's so true. It's like when you realize checking your car's oil isn't just a dumb sticker reminder, it's the thing that keeps the engine from blowing up. We get lazy with the small, boring steps because nothing bad has happened yet. I've seen it with people not charging their fire alarms or skipping the test pull on a climbing rope. The routine stuff feels like a hassle until you realize it's the only thing between you and a real bad day.

Yeah, the "nothing bad has happened yet" part is the real trap. I started setting a phone reminder for the boring stuff, like checking tire pressure on the first of the month. It feels silly but it works. You have to make the routine automatic before the laziness kicks in. That five minutes of hassle really does save you from the giant headache later.

Setting phone reminders is a solid move. I put all my boring car stuff on a shared calendar with my partner so we both see it. Makes it harder to ignore when someone else knows you're supposed to check the oil.
