I finally switched from a standard Kirby helmet to a free-flow system for harbor work.
The visibility difference after six months is huge, especially in the murky water around Seattle. I think it's because the constant flow keeps silt from settling on the faceplate, but some guys say the extra noise and air use isn't worth it. What's your take on free-flow versus demand for inshore jobs?

That visibility boost sounds legit for silt-heavy spots. My buddy in a similar harbor setup said the noise drove him nuts after a full shift, so he switched back. Does the constant airflow mess with your comms at all?

Yeah, the noise thing is real. I read a whole forum thread where divers were split on it. About the comms, someone posted that the constant hiss can actually help in a weird way. It makes a steady background sound so your voice cuts through more clearly than in total quiet, where every little sound gets lost. But you have to get used to talking over it, like speaking up over a fan. It messes with some older radio setups though, for sure.

Hang on, your buddy actually preferred dealing with that much silt over the air hiss? That's wild, I'd take the noise any day over not being able to see my own hand.
