I used to think a 5 minute surface interval was enough after a 45 meter dive in cold water.

My dive partner in Seattle pointed out my sloppy logs and made me track my actual deco times for a month, and now I stick to a strict 15 minute minimum. Anyone else have a rule they thought was flexible until data proved you wrong?

My old rule was to check my gear once before a trip. Then I forgot a fin strap on a boat dive and had to rent. Now I do a full gear check the night before and again the morning of, every single time.
