Lifeguard whistle on my drysuit inflator valve was a stupid idea
Had a $60 inflator valve fail mid-dive off Catalina Island last week cause I tied a whistle to it with a zip tie that cracked the housing, so now I just clip the whistle to my harness webbing like everyone else does.

Honestly, doesn't this kind of thing happen with a lot of our gear? You try to save money or be clever with a hack, and then it totally backfires in the dumbest way. I've seen people break expensive tent poles by trying to hang a wet sock off them with a carabiner, or ruin a drybag zipper because they shoved too much stuff in it. It's like we all gotta learn the hard way that your gear is built for one job, not for being a multi-tool you DIY'd yourself.

Bring up the fact that some of these gear hacks actually get pushed by influencers who never test them long term. Then everyone tries it on a real trip and bam, ruined gear.
