Switched from a standard Kirby to a full face mask for a job in Lake Michigan last week

Always thought the extra bulk wasn't worth it, but the viz was maybe 2 feet and the current was strong. The full face let me talk to topside clearly without dropping my reg, which saved a ton of time and air. Anyone else make the switch for low viz work and stick with it?

Actually, it's a Kirby Morgan band mask, not a full face mask. They're different things. The Kirby is the standard one that still lets you use your own reg in your mouth. A real full face mask has the regulator built into it. Both are great for comms in bad viz, but the Kirby is what most commercial divers use. Sounds like it worked out well for you on that job.

Yeah, the band mask is a total game changer for comms. It keeps the water off your face so you can actually talk without swallowing the ocean. The built-in reg masks are great too, but having your own reg in your mouth just feels more secure to me, like you're not relying on a single seal. That Kirby design is everywhere for a reason.
