Vent: the D-ring on my bailout cost me 40 minutes in 12 feet of water
Last Tuesday I was doing a shallow pier inspection in Gulfport and went to grab my bailout bottle off the harness. The D-ring was bent just enough that my clip would not release, and I spent almost 40 minutes fighting it while my tender watched from the surface. Turns out a 15 cent stainless D-ring rated to 500 lbs had no business holding a 6 lb bottle in the first place. I switched to a quick release shackle that afternoon and the difference is night and day. Has anyone else had a cheap piece of hardware lock them out of their own emergency air?
The load rating was never your problem, a 500 lb D-ring holds a 6 lb bottle just fine. The issue was that your clip and ring were probably mismatched sizes, which is what actually causes binding.
