Heard a guy at the parts counter in Tulsa say he reuses head bolts "all the time" and it's been bugging me for a week
He was buying a gasket kit for a 6.0 and laughing about how torque-to-yield bolts are "a scam by the fastener companies." Those bolts stretch past their yield point when you torque them, so they will not clamp right the second time, and I have seen a head lift at 40k miles because of it. Has anyone actually caught a comeback job from reused TTY bolts, or am I overthinking this one?
Used to figure the whole TTY thing was overblown too, until we pulled the heads off a 6.0 that a guy had "saved money" on. Every bolt was stretched past spec and two of them had already started to yield, which is exactly why that head was seeping coolant at the gasket. These bolts are meant to be used once, and the cost of a new set is nothing next to doing the job twice.
