I walked away from a job in Kansas City because of a 12V oil pump
I was on a 2005 Peterbilt in the yard and the shop foreman told me to drop the oil pan just to check a sensor he guessed at. I pulled the pan and found a broken pickup tube, but he still wanted me to R&R the whole pump as a "just in case" on my dime. Is it just me or do some foremans treat warranty time like it's coming out of their own paycheck?

Man, that is frustrating. Here's something nobody's talking about though - that "just in case" stuff is a red flag for a shop that's scared to stand behind its own diagnosis. In my experience, a good foreman will eat the cost of a mis-diagnosis or a swapped part that didn't fix it, because that's part of learning the trade. But this guy wanted you to do extra work on your own time? That tells me he's either protecting his own bonus or the shop is running so tight they can't afford to take a hit on a mistake. Your mileage may vary, but I've seen shops that push that "warranty time is precious" mindset end up with guys quitting or cutting corners to save minutes. It always backfires in the long run. That broken pickup tube was the real problem, and you called it. No reason to tear into a pump that was fine.

Did that foreman also have a habit of walking around with a clipboard looking busy but never actually getting his hands dirty? Sounds like he's more worried about his quarterly bonus than the truck actually being fixed right...
