Just realized my torque wrench was off by 20 ft-lbs on a head gasket job

I was out in western Nebraska last month doing a head gasket on a Cummins ISX and kept feeling like the bolts were going in too easy. Checked my wrench against a buddy's calibrated one and turns out it was reading way low after I dropped it off a trailer. Anyone else ever had a tool throw off a whole repair without even knowing?

20 ft-lbs off is crazy, that could have turned a good head gasket job into a blown motor before you even got it off the trailer. I had a buddy who snapped three main bolts on a 6.7 Powerstroke because his torque wrench was 25 high after he loaned it to a guy who used it as a breaker bar. It messes with your head when you're tightening and everything feels normal but the numbers are liars the whole time. Did you catch it before you fired the engine up or was this after the fact when something let go?
