Old timer at the shop swore by brake cleaner for removing old vinyl decals
I had this older guy, must be pushing 70, tell me that brake cleaner works better than any adhesive remover for taking off those old vinyl decals on truck cabs. I always used a heat gun and goo gone, took forever and left residue. He said spray it on, let it sit 30 seconds, and it peels right off without scraping. I tried it last week on a 2015 Freightliner with some faded company logos, and I'll be damned if it didn't work perfect. The decal came off in one sheet, no sticky mess left behind. But I'm wondering if it's safe on paint long term? Has anyone else used brake cleaner for this and seen any clear coat damage later on?

Read somewhere that brake cleaner is basically just a strong solvent, so it makes sense it'd melt that adhesive. Heard a guy on another forum say he's used it for years on his personal truck and never saw any clear coat issues, but he always wiped it off quick and didn't let it pool up. Might be worth testing on a hidden spot first just to be safe, especially if the paint's already a little rough. Brake cleaner can strip wax too, so you'd probably need to re-wax that area after.

Yeah, that sounds about right. Brake cleaner is pretty aggressive stuff, so being quick about it is key. Testing on a hidden spot is good advice too, especially if the paint's not in perfect shape.
