Pro tip: Let your injectors soak before pulling them

I fought a set of injectors on an '06 Cummins for almost 4 hours last week. Broke a puller and about lost my cool. An old guy at the shop next door told me to fill the bores with penetrating oil and let them sit overnight. Came back this morning and three came out by hand. Has anyone else had that work that well or did I just get lucky?

The heat cycling from normal engine operation might be making the corrosion worse over time by expanding the metal against the injector body. A lot of people don't realize that letting the engine cool completely before soaking can give the oil a better chance to seep in deep. Could the thermal shock from running it hot then cooling off actually be tightening those injectors in there?

The '02 Ford I had for ten years had injectors that were practically welded in by 150k miles. I always just soaked them hot thinking the heat would help loosen things up. Your point about cooling down first makes a lot of sense though, never considered the expansion factor actually working against the oil. Pulling them out cold with some penetrating oil sitting overnight would probably save a lot of broken bolts and stripped threads. Thanks for that, honestly going to change how I prep for injector work from now on.
