PSA: the old timer at the pump shop said to check your fuel filters before you touch anything else
I was at a diesel shop in Abilene last month picking up an injector and this guy who has been turning wrenches for like 40 years heard me complaining about a truck running rough at idle. He asked one question, when did you last cut open a fuel filter? I told him I just swap them at the interval and never look inside. He grabbed a filter off his bench that came from a truck with only 8,000 miles on the change and it was full of black sludge and water. He said pull the filter first and cut it, the debris in there tells you if it is the lift pump, the tank, or the injectors, and you save yourself yanking parts for no reason. I started doing it on every rough runner that comes through and two of them ended up being a failing lift pump I would have missed. Any of you cut every filter open or do you only do it when something acts up?
